Why we can’t get enough of the new Rolls-Royce Dawn

When the brand new Rolls-Royce Dawn made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week, the legendary carmaker delivered exactly what the doctor ordered.

The luxurious new four-seater convertible isn’t too much of a departure from what Rolls-Royce has always done so well – make superior motors combining heritage and innovation.

On reflection, it shouldn’t really be a surprise that the car is so stunning - when you’ve got the likes of the 1952 handmade silver Dawn Park Ward Drophead coupe and the Dawn’s predecessors, the Phantom Drophead Coupe and the Wraith, for inspiration – but the Dawn is even more sophisticated and seductive than anyone could have imagined. 

We usually snigger at the meaningless buzzwords used to describe cars, but such is the beauty of the Dawn, even we are drawn in by the “midnight sapphire” paintwork and “masculine chrome blades” on the newly improved grill, both of which seem to give the car a real sense of authority.

Inside the Dawn, it is the intricacies and attention to detail that brings this car to life. Precision instruments cancel out any unwanted sound and the combination of orange mandarin leather and the open-pour wood deck is striking and luxurious in equal measure.

And it packs a punch, too. A powerful 6.6-litre V12 with 563bhp propels it from 0-100km/h in just 4.9 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h.

Yet while it’s comfortably fast enough to dominate the Sheikh Zayed Road fast lane, the way the Dawn should really be appreciated is with the top down, cruising along Jumeirah Beach Road or around Emaar Boulevard.

The Rolls-Royce Dawn is a car of luxury, poise and impossible beauty, and we’d happily drive (or be driven in) it from Dawn until dusk.
