There’s a new Apple store in Dubai Mall

See the light
Walking through the joyless food court at The Dubai Mall is never fun. But with the new Apple store at the top of the escalators, the light now cascading through its giant 12m-high windows and into the food court below pulls you in like a tractor beam.

The terrace
After moving through the store, past the shiny Apple toys, you’ll arrive outside on a curved balcony of polished stone that feels like you’re on deck of a gleaming, futuristic spaceship. The terrace looks directly over the Dubai Fountain, Souk Al Bahar and the Burj Khalifa and provides a proper wow moment.

Upstairs, downstairs
The new store measures 56 metres in width and is on two levels. Level one has all the gear and gadgets, and is patrolled by an army of smiling, chirpy Apple people. In the corner is a staircase of 40 steps (we counted because we’re nerds) leading to level two which has a forum and giant video screen, plus some cool wooden cubes and balls for sitting on that look very Swedish.

Back to school
Today At Apple is a new learning initiative set up by the tech giant to educate its customers. The forum will host around 60 tutorials and workshops per week from beginner to expert level. The sessions are free and cover topics such as digital sketching, film editing, music production, photography and coding. The workshops will be displayed online for a two-week view and you can book online or walk in. Creative professionals will run some sessions and Dubai’s opening day on Thursday April 27 sees live art with Myneandyours, plus music from Hamdan Al Abri and art by Sultan Al Ramahi.

Build it and they will come
The architect in charge of the project is Stefan Behling from the premier firm Foster + Partners. He told EDGAR, “All stores in a mall look in because that’s where the business is – that's conventional retail thinking. I loved this location in The Dubai Mall because we could tear up the rule book and see this amazing setting with the fountains and the Burj Khalifa. These are the best seats in the house to see the fountains.”

The store opens on Thursday April 27 at 4pm.
