The dark side: epic Star Wars-themed photography set in modern-day Dubai

Cédric Delsaux’s photos see your favourite Star Wars characters invade Dubai.

Imagine a vast army ofStar Wars droids assembling for an attack on Downtown Dubai, as a giant Millennium Falcon spacecraft hovers next to the Burj Khalifa, and all the while the evil Darth Vader presides over the construction of a Sheikh Zayed Road tower.

It's a pretty bizarre thought, yet when you see the work of photographer Cédric Delsaux, who added George Lucas's characters to his eerie shots of a dark and dusty Dubai to create those very scenes, they seem perfectly at home in the emirate's modernStar Wars-esque landscape.

Delsaux started the project, which he compiled into a book called Dark Lens, by taking photographs of what he calls "the peripheral zones" of modern cities - wastelands, scrapyards and deserts, mainly in Dubai and Paris. He took most of his shots between 2005 and 2010, but when he began working on them for production of his book, he felt that they looked "flat" and were lacking in excitement. As you'd expect, the addition of Jabba the Hut, Darth Vader, C-3PO and company immediately gave the photographs a whole new meaning and much more of a universal appeal.

When the book came out in 2011, it received an excellent reception from critics and fans alike, but the biggest praise came from a certain Mr Lucas: “Over the years, many artists have interpreted Star Wars in ways that extend well beyond anything we saw in the films," said the director. "One of the most unique and intriguing interpretations that I have seen is in the work of Cedric Delsaux, who has cleverly integrated Star Wars characters and vehicles into stark urban, industrial - but unmistakably earthbound - environments. As novel and disruptive as his images are, they are also completely plausible."

High praise indeed from someone who is notoriously protective of his film empire (pun very much intended). Anyway, enough with our bad Star Wars jokes, here are some of our favourite shots from the book, taken in our very own city of Dubai: Cedric Delsaux Dubai Star Wars artwork.
