Spoiler-free movie preview: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Your cheeks are going to hurt from all the laughing.

April 26, 2017

Chris Pratt is back with his ragtag group of unlikely heroes to save the galaxy from more bad guys. Here’s what you can expect and what you need to know about the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel.

You don’t need to watch the first part
Vol. 2 is a standalone sequel. So not only do you not have to watch the first part, you don’t even need to have watched any Marvel movie. There are nods to the previous movie, but even those are spelt out in the dialogue.

Prepare yourself for a whole lot of awws
Remember that tree trunk voiced by Vin Diesel? You know, that plant-like thing who “don't know talkin' good like me and you, so his vocabulistics is limited to "I" and "am" and "Groot," exclusively in that order.” Well, that hulking tree is now a baby with puppy dog eyes. And every time he’s shown on screen, ladies – and a few gentlemen – can’t help themselves from saying cutesy things.

You’ll have a smile plastered on your face
Like the first movie, GOTGVol2 is funny beyond measure and will keep you smiling no matter what. Inevitably it isn’t better than the first one, but that doesn’t mean it’s not good.

Dave Bautista is the real Star(-Lord) of the movie
Sure Bradley Cooper (voices Rocket Racoon), Vin Diesel and Chris Pratt are the bigger stars, but Dave Bautista  - who plays the overly literal Drax – outshines them all. Of course, we should expect nothing less from a man who has spent a large part of his acting career playing a WWE superstar. Think of him as the Hangover-edition Zack Galifianakis of the group.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 releases on May 4.
