Tasted: Indego by Vineet, Grosvenor House

Is celeb chef Vineet Bhatia’s award-winning restaurant the best place for contemporary Indian food in Dubai?

May 28, 2014

As the flagship Dubai restaurant of Michelin-starred chef Vineet Bhatia, it is no surprise that Indego by Vineet has been heralded as the region’s finest contemporary Indian restaurant for quite some time.

That is not by accident. From the moment you wander up the spiral entrance ramp into the dimly lit dining area there is a distinctive sense of quality. Large tables, with impeccably white tablecloths, set with wine glasses and bespoke cutlery allude to the fact that this is a classy place. All that is before you consider the dark wood partitions, scattered rose petals and warm candlelight.

With an average of one hundred covers per night, Indego accomplishes what almost every restaurant owner craves for – a constant flow of new and returning customers, even on its slower nights (if such a thing exists!).

The main dining area is elegant and buzzes with a busy hubbub from content diners, while the balcony seating (still just about manageable this month) has great views over Dubai Marina.

Twice a year Chef Bhatia takes time out of his busy globetrotting schedule and jets into town to revamp the Indego’s six-course tasting menu. The latest incarnation is right up to his high standards.

The starter courses consist of a hearty Lentil and spinach soup with crab-melon marbles, followed by a Varki black-olive rosemary chicken tikka, with a wonderfully creative black olive sorbet.

The main courses of Coriander-chilli lobster with crushed potatoes and peas, and Smoke-cloud herb encrusted lamb chop with khichdi biryani were the highlight of the meal – both the lamb and lobster had an exceptional balance of spice and demonstrated very assured – but not over-confident – levels of creativity. The inch-perfect portion sizes meant that there was still space to devour the Apple and pumpkin seed helwa and cinnamon panna cotta for dessert. Perfect.

The immaculate service and its ability to succeed in consistently pushing the standards of contemporary Indian cuisine.
