Restaurant to try this weekend: Black Tap
Black Tap brings its burgers to Dubai. Here’s what you need to know.March 29, 2017
Black Tap is a New York import, right?
Correct. Michelin-starred chef Joe Isidori has spots in Midtown, Soho and Meatpacking District, and says, “This is real food, real messy, for real people.” New Yorkers queue outside the door for the burgers and shakes.
Pretty popular then?
You could say that. Black Tap has won five out of six burger competitions in the last two years, including the New York Burger Buster Awards, which are like the Oscars of the burger biz – only without tuxedos.
Tell me about the Dubai place.
It’s in the Jumeirah Al Naseem Hotel, right on the lagoon. There are neon slogans, graffiti and humorous signs, plus craft beer.
How are the burgers?
Juicy, huge and delicious. The All American Burger (AED 65) is made from Omaha beef and is topped with ‘special sauce.’
What’s the ‘special sauce’?
It’s a secret. But I’m guessing it contains mayonnaise, fairy tears and stardust.
And the shakes?
Ridiculous. I attempted the Brooklyn Blackout, a brown and white splurge of ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate dots and two brownies.
It was. I only managed to eat a quarter of it and then had to lie down afterwards.
You must try the sprouts.
Sprouts? In a burger place?
They’re roasted and dressed in tahini – unbelievable. Oh, and the fries taste of real potato, and not vegetable oil, which is sadly often the case in other, lesser burger establishments.
So, in summary it’s safe to say you dig Black Tap?
I want to live there.
