All Is By My Side - the Jimi Hendrix biopic

July 13, 2014

For a biopic to even get past the stages of script editing, the title character needs to be someone of confirmed legendary status. So this one of Jimi Hendrix, aka the greatest rock musician of all time, more than qualifies. Jimi: All Is By My Side is a long-awaited look at the life of the genre-creating guitarist for a new generation. It focuses on just one year of Hendrix's life but it was arguably the most important of his career - 1966/67. The film shows the Seattle-born musician at his hippy swaggering best, as he is pulled from the unknown ranks in New York to make his name on London's heady 60s music scene. It focuses mainly on his relationships with the two women in his life at the time - Linda Keith and Kathy Etchingham - of whom several of his songs were influenced. Needless to say, playing such an iconic character is not an easy job but early reports suggest Andre Benjamin - aka Andre 3000 of Outkast fame - nails his portrayal of the eccentric genius. Directed by John Ridley - who won an Oscar for his work on 12 Years a Slave - we've got our fingers crossed that the Hendrix homage will make epic viewing, as it's nothing less than the great man deserves. However, as the Hendrix estate wasn't included in the making of the film none of his famous songs can be used - which, really, is the whole point in going to see it. Details: in cinemas August 2014.
