New Era releases Spike Lee-inspired 1996 Collection

The hat is one of the most commonly worn pieces of clothing in the world. But with its unique logo and design, New Era’s Yankees cap is unquestionably the most popular and recognisable piece of headgear out there. Now, the sportswear and lifestyle brand has launched the latest design in its Heritage Series, the 1996 Collection, with the help of its long-time friend, film director Spike Lee. In 1996, Lee picked up the phone and called Chris Koch, New Era’s CEO, to ask for a bespoke scarlet red Yankees cap to be made. They only came in dark navy at the time. After special permission was granted, Lee wore the new cap at game three of the 1996 World Series in Atlanta, instantly giving the new shade huge publicity. History was made and since then the famous NY logo has been displayed on the heads of the sport, art and music world's most iconic people, in a host of different colours. newera1 The new collection – which launches globally on July 24 – comes in four types: two made of 100 per cent wool, and two of leather (Kanye West is going to love that), each with the signature 1996 World Series side patch.
