The stylist to the stars with real cutting edge
September 25, 2014
Adam Saaks has a truly remarkable talent. Aside from the fact he's an internationally renowned fashion designer, he also has the unique ability of being able to approach pretty much any celebrity on the planet brandishing a pair of razor-sharp scissors and hack away at their clothes without being tackled by a team of body guards or arrested.
In fact, such is the demand for his services that he is even asked to showcase his skill at events all over the world. One such event is taking place this weekend (Friday September 26 and Saturday September 27) at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi. Ahead of the show, we caught up with Adam to find out more about the man they call The Master Shredder. Here are the excerpts:
How did you get into T-shirt cutting?
I had been working as a wardrobe stylist on the set of fashion shows for more than 10 years prior to my T-shirt cutting days, which is where I developed a knack for altering clothes to enhance the fit of them to suit different body shapes.
As I was working with a variety of fabrics and designs (as well as body shapes) someone asked me to cut a T-shirt in public one day, which interestingly went on to attract a crowd. I loved the adrenaline of performing in public, so it inspired me to start creating the designs I practice today, with a crowd-pleasing element included.

What is your personal style?
I’d probably define my style as easy and laid-back. I like to be comfortable in what I wear and so I keep evolving my personal look. I’ve slowly phased out of my yogi attire and have started wearing a lot of black this year, so I’d say it is whatever I can feel the most relaxed in.
Who are you influenced by?
I’m most influenced by women and music. Whether it be a celebrity, model or anyone else; my inspiration for each piece is derived from the person I’m styling for. It helps me focus on the design I want to create that will best enhance the natural shape and look of a piece, as I thrive off one inspirational moment at a time.
What would you consider your greatest achievement?
I have been very lucky to achieve everything I have ever wanted, but my greatest achievement would have to be giving my sister one of my kidneys when she was dying of kidney failure. It was such a surreal experience but if I had more to give, I would do it in a heartbeat as I consider it a small price to pay for saving someone’s life.

What is your biggest regret?
That’s a good question – every time I think about this, I keep coming to the same conclusion: I have no regrets. I am really into spirituality and meditation and I believe in letting go of things that can adversely affect you. So at this point in my life, I have come to terms with everything that could qualify as a regret, and I am very content with just living my life to the full.
What kind of things should men be wearing right now?
I think the days of fixed styling are long gone and I don’t consider myself to be in any position to dictate what everyone should be wearing. Everyone has their own flair and so creating your own style is important, as it is an extension of your personality.
Tell us more about the event at The Galleria, Al Maryah Island…
This weekend, I’ll be performing both on Friday and Saturday at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, where I’ll be using T-shirts as a canvas to create unique designs with a pair of scissors. I’m really excited to begin cutting T-shirts for the fashion fans of the UAE and hope to see you down there.
How will you tailor your performance and garments for a Middle East audience?
I always try to pay homage to the places I visit, and this will be reflected in my style and performance this weekend. For me, the enjoyment stems from designing pieces that people can really appreciate and love to wear, so every one of my pieces is designed to suit the local style of my audience.
Which celebrity do you really want to work with and why?
I would love to cut a garment on Jenifer Aniston! She just seems like a really cool person and it would be fantastic to see her in one of my designs. She also has a fantastic group of friends and a huge number of fans that I hope would love my stuff too!
