A surprising disparity has been revealed between the satisfaction of female and male expats in the UAE.

According to the recently released InterNations 2015 Expat Insider survey, the UAE ranked 13th in the world in terms of popularity amongst female expats, yet among male expats it could only manage a lowly 28th.

The survey, which polled more than 14,000 expats from 195 countries around the world, found that the UAE was the 19th most popular expat destination overall. The top five countries were Ecuador, Mexico, Malta, Singapore and Luxemburg.

Expatriates were questioned on a range of factors - including cost of living, working hours, ease of settling in and family life – to determine their overall satisfaction with their living situation.

The main differences between UAE women and men came in the cost of living category, with twice as many men than women rating the cost of living in the UAE as “very bad”.

The UAE’s expatriate women were also more satisfied with their career prospects, as the country ranked ninth for work among women but only 18th among men.

It was a similar story in fellow GCC countries Qatar and Saudi Arabia with women reporting higher satisfaction in both countries, however unlike the UAE, which was ranked a respectable 19th overall, Qatar and Saudi finished in a disappointing 45th and 51st positions respectively.
