You could be excused for skipping you gym session these last few days. Between the clogged traffic arteries of the emirate, flooded footpaths and depressing weather, there’s a good chance you thought – and rightly so – you’re better off staying in and catching up on some Netflix shows.
Besides, who really wants to make sweat puddles in a closed area filled with more sweaty people, right?
You may also want to pay attention to that monthly three-to-four digit figure that’s deducted from your account. That sum doesn’t get smaller when you skip a couple of days like you did just now. Nor does it adjust itself when you take a holiday or are too sick to go. Throw in the thought of going during the gruelling summer and suddenly that membership isn’t looking to great, is it?
Turns out, you’re in luck. According to a study carried out by McMaster University in Ontario, Canada brief, intermittent periods of intense stair climbing provides similar health benefits to a rigorous sprint interval training program – you know, the kind your merciless gym instructor loves putting you through.
For the study, published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the team recruited 31 sedentary but otherwise healthy specimens and tested the effect of the two different protocols, each of which required a 10-minute time commitment, including warm-up, cool down and recovery periods.
The exercise sessions were conducted three times a week over the course of six weeks. Both protocols, each involving a total time commitment of 30 minutes a week, increased cardiorespiratory fitness — an important health marker linked to longevity. So not only do you stay in shape, you also increase your life expectancy.
With this alternative, you don’t even need to leave the confines of your posh building. Also, 30 minutes is far less than the hours you’d spend in traffic. So go on then, get climbing.
