12 football legends to watch in the new Indian Super League

Del Piero, Trezeguet and Anelka should get Indian football fans buzzing.

Ask any Indian what his favourite sport is and he'll invariably tell you it's cricket. If you go on to ask him if he likes football, he might mumble a few words about Manchester United or Chelsea, but apart from that there's generally very little interest.

However, this is something that the organisers of the Indian Super League (ISL) are hoping to change with their new star-studded tournament, which began on October 12, 2014, with Mumbai City going down 3-0 to Atletico De Kolkata.

Much like the hugely successful IPL cricket tournament, the ISL depends on several star players who are signed on extremely lucrative short-term contracts to attract viewers.

With team owners including the likes of Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and current cricket captain MS Dhoni, there's no shortage of interest, and there's certainly no expense spared when it comes to paying the stars.

Among the big names are: Alessandro Del Piero, Nicolas Anelka, Joan Capdevila, Elano, David James, Freddie Ljunberg, Luis Garcia, Marco Materazzi, Robert Pires, David Trezeguet and managers Zico and Peter Reid
