Days after single-handedly carrying Real Madrid to victory over bitter rivals Atlético Madrid in the Champions League semi-final with a hat-trick – that’s 47 career hat-tricks for him now – Cristiano Ronaldo created history again. The Portuguese captain is now the first man to have reached 100 million followers on Instagram.
Don’t scoff at those numbers. We admit it’s no Ballon d’Or trophy but it’s a testament to the man’s online popularity. To put his accomplishment into perspective, he is now not only the first footballer to reach that figure he’s also the world’s first athlete and the first man to reach those heights.
It doesn’t stop there. According to Bleacher Report, Ronaldo now has 272.8 million followers across the three biggest social media platforms in the world: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. That makes him the most followed person on the planet.
