When EDGAR bumped into Anthony Joshua in Dubai
Just another day in the UAE, sharing Al Naseem’s breakfast buffet with the heavyweight boxing champ.Robert Chilton January 8, 2017
Nothing makes you feel more guilty, more ashamed and more unhealthy than when you reach for a cronut and – with your tongs gripping the said pastry in mid air – spot boxing champion Anthony Joshua next to you piling his plate high with a protein-packed breakfast of eggs and turkey sausage.
EDGAR rubbed shoulders with the IBF heavyweight champion at the new Al Naseem Jumeirah hotel at the weekend. Or rather, we would have rubbed shoulders if we had had a step ladder. The man is enormous.
Children clutching their breakfast plates stopped and stared at the six-feet-six giant as he cheerfully strolled around the buffet in his Under Armour navy polo shirt and shorts bearing the letters GBR, with a Louis Vuitton rucksack on his back. One Australian woman walked up to Joshua, 27, and gasped at how tall he was, to which the boxer chuckled.
The British boxer was in Dubai for the New Year celebrations, as were ex-footballer Rio Ferdinand and golfer Lee Westwood. Joshua is packing in some warm weather training at Skydive Dubai ahead of his mammoth heavyweight title fight with Vladimir Klitschko in London on April 29.
Joshua, who won Olympic gold at London 2012, has been Instagramming his Dubai holiday and judging by his feed, he's been having a whale of a time in the city. The night before our breakfast buffet encounter, EDGAR spotted Joshua and his pals at Al Naseem’s chilled watering hole Ambar reclining on the sofas.
As well as intense training in the ring, Joshua is also said to be furthering his business interests. The Brit – whose record currently stands at 18 fights, 18 wins, all by knockout – is in talks to open a gym where members can train alongside Victoria secret models (where do we sign up?).
If we’re lucky enough to snag a membership, we’re pretty sure we’ll have to give up the cronuts.
