Woman of the Week: Emily Browning
With the release of the new Kray twins biopic, Legend, the talented Australian has grown from child star to serious actor.EDGAR staff September 14, 2015
In her latest role as Reggie Kray’s defiant wife, Frances, in the Kray twins biopic, Legend (trailer above), Emily Browning has finally shown her credentials as a serious actor.
It has been a long time coming for the 26-year-old Australian, after she got her big break in movies at the age of 14 with the role of Violet Baudelaire in the short-lived Hollywood franchise Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events.
Since then Browning’s career has stalled somewhat. She landed two lead roles in 2011 – in action-fantasy Sucker Punch and artsy-erotic Sleeping Beauty – but neither film really captured the imagination. And last year she received another lukewarm reception for her role opposite Kit Harrington in Paul Anderson’s sword-and-sandal adventure Pompeii.
However, in the recently released crime biopic, Legend, Browning puts in a stellar performance as East End gangster Reggie Kray’s wife, mastering a cockney accent both on screen and in her narration throughout the film.
In fact, the only thing that prevents her from stealing the show completely is that Tom Hardy – who Browning herself calls “intimidatingly talented” – somehow manages to play the roles of both Kray twins.
Clearly the talented Aussie has come a long way since her child acting days, and with her stock now at the highest it’s ever been, it is our pleasure to award her with this week’s Woman of the Week title.
