2021 Lamborghini Urus test drive

Words by Nathan Irvine

The fastest family car around

You have to feel sorry for Lamborghini’s competitors. For years they had a clear run at making a luxury SUV to win over families and those that prefer a bit more space in their cars. Then in 2018 the Italian car manufacturer launched the Urus - its very first luxury sports utility vehicle. Not only did it burst onto the scene, it drove over its rivals with more speed, more off-road capabilities and much more.

Since then, Lamborghini has continued to build on its initial successes to make your choice luxury SUV choice that much easier. The 2021 Lamborghini Urus is testament to this. A combination of the company’s peerless approach to style and finesse that keeps its front bumper ahead of the pack.

Lamborghini recently let us get behind the wheel of the brand-new 2021. What’s immediately apparent is just how good looking it is. Never mind just the SUV category, the Urus is one of the most stunning cars on the road today. It’s got lines and curves for days and sits tall on the road to give you a great view of the asphalt it chews up at pace.

There’s that futuristic cockpit feel that Lamborghini has been perfecting over the years. It’s like strapping yourself into a video game fighter jet or spaceship, and it instantly makes you feel giddy with anticipation. And that’s before you’ve even fired up the engine.

It might not feature the V10 of its hypercar lineup, but the twin-turbo V8 engine still provides a chill of excitement when it’s fired up.

Stopping power

The test drive along is made more special as we had to tail a Lamborghini Huracan - a car so fast, a lesser vehicle would struggle to keep up. But not the 2021 Urus. It has way more torque than the lighter, nippier hypercar. So when it pulls away, and I plant my foot to the floor with the pedal, the 2021 keeps up. Sure, the Huracan might outstrip the Urus on asphalt, but, well, this luxury SUV can and will beat it over any other type of surface - sand, snow, rocks and the like.

As quick as it takes off, the 2021 Lamborghini Urus can match it with its stopping prowess. This means you can safely navigate road traffic… or quickly avoided a fine when a speed camera suddenly creeps up on you.

Although it’s bigger than anything else Lamborghini sends down its production line, the 2021 Urus feels just as responsive to handle. It’s like a go-kart on steroids. And although the drive was light on technical bits of road, I couldn’t help but wonder what it’d be like to swing it through apexes on a closed circuit. Next time, maybe.

Equally, the pops and growls that come from the engine and exhausts when you switch it to Corsa - the mode that makes it ready to race. Chugging along in traffic with the Corsa switched on felt like I was punishing the Urus somehow. But when a straight bit of road appeared, it angrily gobbled it up as I was thrown back into the luxurious, hand-stitched racing seats. It was quite the rush.

If you’ve got the cash, then the 2021 Lamborghini Urus is a hard-package to beat. It looks great, can handle all types of surfaces, has a top speed of 306km/h and you can fit your shopping in it. What more could you want from an SUV?
