Actors who are reprising roles years later

Words by Nathan Irvine

Don't call it comeback.

You may not have noticed, but there’s a swell of movies being remade at the moment. As well as Disney animations getting the CGI remake, there’s a whole host of actors returning to the roles that made them household names.

What’s most interesting about the selection below is two-fold. 1) There’s a lot of duos returning to old franchises and 2) a fair few of them are Hollywood heavyweights now that probably didn’t need to reprise the role. Hello, Keanu!

Any way, let’s have a look at the actors who are currently reprising roles years later.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton in Terminator: Dark Fate.

Original role: Terminator (1984)

Latest: Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)

Once mortal enemies, Sarah Connor (Hamilton) and the T-800 (Schwarzenegger) team up to take on a greater wave of killing machines.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence walking down a street on the set of Bad Boys 3.

Original role: Bad Boys (1995)

Latest: Bad Boys For Life (2020)

Expect celebrity cameos, action and slick one-liners as the pair bring police offices Mike Lowery (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) back to life.

4

Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves

Original role: Bill & Ted’s Amazing Adventure (1989)

Latest: Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)

Contrasting career trajectories followed the first movie, but that hasn’t stopped Keanu Reeves putting pen to paper on reviving a cult classic with Alex Winter. Most excellent.

3

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise in a scene from Top Gun Maverick.

Original role: Top Gun (1986)

Latest: Top Gun: Maverick (2020)

The Cruiser still looks as fresh faced as when he original played US fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. He’s still doing all of his own stunts in this spiritual sequel.

2

Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall

Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall in the original Coming to America.

Original role: Coming to America (1988)

Latest: Coming 2 America (2020)

A comedy classic back in the day, but we can’t help but wonder just how a group of wealthy immigrants living in the US will play out in today’s current climate.

1

Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith

Jay and Silent Bob.

Original role: Clerks (1994)

Latest: Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019)

The epitome of the phrase ‘cult classic’, layabouts Jay (Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) are bound to win over a whole new audience with their ridiculous ways.
