Blancpain goes deep with new underwater documentary

Words by Nathan Irvine

Down low.

There’s an amazing new documentary that charts the unexplored depths of the Mediterranean Sea. Gombessa V “The Deep Med” is the work of diver, biologist and underwater photographer Laurent Ballesta.

The feat took two years to plan before they even dipped a toe into the water, and pulls into light everything he and his team discovers the waters just off the shore of France.

With the support of the expedition’s founding partner, watch manufacturer Blancpain, Ballesta plunged into deep waters to capture the incredible footage of new species and previously unseen areas of the briny.

Here’s a sneak peek of the action.

Tight squeeze

The four-man crew of the expedition spent 28 days under the sea in a tiny capsule, while a team of 30 above water made sure they were safe.

Every day they would dive out and explore new and mysterious areas of the Mediterranean, all of which has been captured in one stunning documentary that you can watch on arte.tv. You can even watch the individual episode on the Blancpain website.

Each venture outside the submerged pod presented a new challenge. Whether it was a technical dive, new sea life encounter or extreme conditions - the fearless crew navigated the problems safely.

It’s certainly well worth watching. Although those with a touch of claustrophobia, may want to close their eyes during the diving pod bits.
