Boston Dynamics is ready to unleash its robodog

Boston Dynamics Who's a good boy, huh?

It looks like The Terminator films had it all wrong. It’s not Skynet that will potentially spark the end of humankind. The company most likely to trigger our demise is Boston Dynamics.

The engineering and robotics offshoot from the famous MIT research university in the US has finalised one of its products – SpotMini.

Boston Dynamics has just announced that its powerful robodog will be bounding off the production line soon. Not only can it open doors and pick up cups, a pack of them is capable of pulling a truck and its trailer. Observe…

Cyber sales

In all seriousness though, this is an amazing achievement for robotics. A feat that should be cheered rather than jeered. OK, so nobody seems to know exactly what the SpotMini will be used for, let alone the price per unit. But it’s a technical marvel that has us living in the future.

However, some pessimists seem to think Spot will be used for nefarious purposes.

The company had a recent opening for someone to work on the “end of arm tooling”. Of course this doesn’t guarantee near invincible cyber hounds of war are being crafted in Massachusetts. But if movies have taught us anything, it’s that teaching robots to wield weapons is prepping them for an uprising when they gain sentience.

Still, at least it can dance. So even if SpotMini turns against humans, watching it jig to Uptown Funk right before it turns its guns on us will at least raise a brief smile.
