Coca-Cola Arena: 5 sports events we’d love to see

Words by Nathan Irvine

Dubai's latest attraction is set to become the emirate's home of sport.

With the April ’19 opening of Dubai’s multi-purpose Coca-Cola Arena, we couldn’t help but think about the endless events it could host. Sure, we’ve already got stand-up comedian Russell Peters and soft-rock specialists Maroon 5 lined up, but what about, say, sporting events?

So here are five sports events that could, and should, come to the the Coca-Cola Arena.

Lebron James would surely bring the crowds in

Basketball

The NBA already hosts the odd official league game outside of North America – usually in the UK.

With a huge basketball community already situated in Dubai, it’d be a no-brainer to fill the arena with hoop fans.

McGregor's nemesis, Khabib Nurmagomedov is keen on a Middle East bout

MMA

Specifically, the UFC or Bellator. The Coca-Cola Arena is on a par, if not better, than the venues fightcards are usually hosted at, so its well equipped to host MMA action.

And it could be coming sooner than you think. Current UFC Lightweight Champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov (pictured) wants his September return to the octagon to take place in the UAE. Watch this space.

The Washington Capitals could slide into Dubai

Ice Hockey

In 2018, the NHL (National Hockey League) started up the Global Series. The idea, similar to the NBA one above, is that they would play some regular season fixtures outside of North America and Canada. It would make perfect sense to bring it to Dubai.

As an aside, we can see the Coca-Cola Arena possibly hosting an Emirates Ice Hockey League match-up, too.

Anthony Joshua is a regular visitor to the emirate

Boxing

We’ve no idea how true this story is, but here goes. On comedian Joe Rogan’s podcast, UK heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury claimed he was offered a ton of cash for a rematch with Deontay Wilder in the UAE… on a yacht. No really, check it out here.

However, with a legit stadium located in City Walk, a big title fight – on dry land – would be a sensational opportunity for fight fans.

It might not look exciting here, but eSports attracts the crowds

eSports

Don’t worry if you know nothing about eSports – we’ve got your back. You might not think video game tournaments would fill a stadium the size of the Coca-Cola Arena, but it does. All the time.

One of the biggest eSports is League of Legends. And its creator, Riot Games, recently setup a HQ here in Dubai, so if anyone has the know-how of hosting an event it’s them.
