NewsFirst look: Donald Glover’s Adidas sneakers

Words by Rob Chilton

Childish Gambino star releases deconstructed shoes with the three-striped German brand.

When it comes to collaborations, Adidas’s track record is hard to beat: Pharrell Williams, Stella McCartney, Rick Owens, Raf Simons and Yohji Yamamoto are some of the coolest creatives on the planet who have lent their talents to the three stripes. The German brand has done it again, this time with Donald Glover.

Glover has tweaked three iconic Adidas shoes

The actor/musician/comedian/writer/director (did we miss anything?) has worked on three twisted versions of iconic Adidas shoes that drop April 26. Starting at AED 425, the Adidas Originals range features deconstructed rebirths of the Nizza, the Continental 80, and the Lacombe.

“With this project, I wanted to encourage people to think about how their stories can be told on their feet,” explains Glover. “Value isn’t quantified by what you wear, rather the experiences from them. And you make the decision on what works for you, you live through your own lens.” He and Mo’nique appear in five short sketches – Avocado, 1985, Timber, Dusty, and Polenta – to announce the collaboration.

The three new models are not your typical, pristine footwear. Uneven stitching, three stripes that look like they’ve been hand-painted, and unstitched canvas edges and shoelaces that will fray with time and wear are some of the daring decisions made by Glover and Adidas.

The Nizza (AED 425) is a new take on a 1970s basketball shoe with a hand-drawn three stripes. The leather and canvas Continental 80 from the 1980s has a split rubber cupsole and is lined with terry towelling (AED 500). Finally, there’s the perforated tennis Lacombe shoe (AED 500) which is inspired by the vintage Newcombe sneaker.

A moth, the symbol of the collection, appears on the heel bumpers and insoles of the shoes that arrive in an inside-out box and opens with a tear strip. Glover adds, “The partnership for me is about being able to exemplify what doing your own thing truly looks and feels like.”
