GMC Hummer is about to go green

Words by Nathan Irvine

The vehicle will be teased during the Super Bowl ads.

The electric car revolution continues at pace and this time it’s coming in the form of a notorious gas-guzzler. GMC’s Hummer has long been a monster of the road and practically needs to stop at a gas station every few kilometres to top up the tank.

But there’s been a shift in thinking at the US car manufacturer, and the new Hummer will be completely electric. It will be revealed in a TV spot during the Sunday 2nd, Super Bowl LIV.

It’s a move that follows in the tyre tracks of Tesla’s upcoming Cybertruck. The GMC Hummer EV will keep all of its heftiness and power, but will run completely on battery power.

Here’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it teaser.

Gimme the numbers

Some of the numbers being attributed to the Hummer EV are astounding. A mooted 1,000 bhp for example, will propel the car from 0-60mph in a three seconds. That’s as fast as a 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S.

It will also have 11,500 lb-ft of torque, which will make towing and hauling an absolute breeze.

Sadly, aside from a full reveal on May 5, 2020, there isn’t any more solid information on the Hummer EV. When we asked GMC when it would be out we were told “TBC”. Watch this space though, as the electric truck arms races is about to heat up.
