WatchesGucci’s groovy new 1970s watches

Words by Rob Chilton

The era of flares and big hair provides the inspiration for a quartet of timepieces from the Italian fashion powerhouse.

Alessandro Michele’s love for the 1970s emanates from every stitch of clothing he sends down the runway. Now, the star designer at Gucci has brought that retro vibe to a series of new quartz watches called Grip.

The unisex foursome have rounded square cases – a key trend from the world of watchmaking in the 1970s. On each dial sit three windows, behind which a rotating dial shows the hour, minutes and date.

Steel and yellow gold models are engraved with Gucci’s interlocking G logo while two others carry coloured calf leather straps: green with a steel case, or burgundy with a yellow gold case.

1970s-influenced Gucci menswear for SS19.

All four watches tap into Michele’s love for the decade that brought us Elvis and Nixon at the White House, Led Zeppelin and Annie Hall. The designer’s collections – especially for this SS19 season – have shown strong references to the styles of that period, with bell-bottom trousers, wild prints, floppy hats and pointed collars dominating the Gucci runway.

More 70s style from Alessandro Michele.

While we’re unconvinced about wearing flares in 2019, this batch of Grip watches is one trend from the 1970s that we can definitely get on board with.
