Kobe Bryant: more than just a basketballer

Words by Nathan Irvine

Farewell to a legend.

Kobe Bryant, the former LA Lakers star and NBA legend, has tragically passed away at the age of 41 in a helicopter crash. The incident happened in Calabasa, California when the aircraft, which was also carrying Bryant’s 13 year old daughter, Gianna, got into difficulties in foggy conditions. All nine aboard sadly perished.

Bryant was one of those rare breed of athletes who transcended their sport.

His name conjures images of perfection. Of a winning mentality that can be applied to everyday life and lift you to greatness. It’s a benchmark for living life to the fullest.

Kobe Bryant appeared to touch the lives of everyone he came into contact with. You just have to look at the shock and messages flooding social media from fans and celebrities. The praise is universal.

Many talents

Bryant was obviously a regular fixture in the success of the LA Lakers and the Team USA basketball teams, guiding both to multiple championships. Off the court he was equally successful with numerous projects that cemented his legacy and helped thousands of people.

His After-School All-Stars charity ensures kids get after school programs to further their education for free. The Kobe Bryant China Fund helps fund education and healthcare for the underprivileged in the country.

Bryant even won an Oscar for a short animation based on his post-retirement poem Dear Basketball. And his book, The Mamba Mentality: How I Play is a fascinating insight into how to stay ahead of the game.

Kobe Bryant’s passing is tragic, and our thoughts are with his family and friends and everyone else who was on that fateful flight. He was more than just a basketballer and his legend will undoubtedly live on.
