Lifting of corona lockdown sparks Hermès spending splurge

Words by Rob Chilton

Hermès store in Guangzhou, China recorded stunning sales after the lockdown was relaxed

The store manager at Hermès in Guangzhou must be walking around with a big smile on their face this week. Reports say the boutique in the affluent part of China recorded sales of $2.7 million in a single weekend when it reopened after the corona virus lockdown.

It’s thought female accessories made up the bulk of the items that passed through the cash register, but judging by the outstanding men’s SS20 collection, there might have been a few pieces of menswear that also got snapped up.

Shown at the Mobilier National in Paris, the SS20 menswear range by designer Véronique Nichanian was – according to the show notes – all about “summery nonchalance” and “a sense of happy freedom.” Here are our 10 favourite looks from the Hermès SS20 menswear collection.

Notable looks included three-button check jackets in water-repellent material, shirts with baseball necklines, large trousers, parkas with zipped high collars in technical canvas and zipped over-shirts.

The colour scheme of mint, plum, and pink, on the other hand, was joyous and pitch-perfect for the summer months.
