Me and my travels: ex-racing driver Mark Webber

Words by Rob Chilton

Having spent 12 seasons in Formula One, Mark Webber has criss-crossed the globe more than most. Throw in a few seasons driving for Porsche in the World Endurance Championships and the Australian is the perfect guy to talk travel. Now fronting the latest Porsche x Boss menswear collection, Webber spoke to EDGAR about beaches, dream destinations and the most beautiful race track he’s ever driven.

What do you suggest visitors see and do if they go to your home state, New South Wales?

I’d definitely recommend getting out into the Blue Mountains west of Sydney and checking out the amazing Australian bush; the sights and sounds are just spectacular. Then, the south and central coasts are beautiful destinations for some of the best beaches in the state.

Where in the world are you desperate to visit and explore next?

There are too many places on my bucket list. But, at the moment the far reaches of Canada, Patagonia and the far east of Russia are top of it. I’m not sure what it says about me but they’re all wilderness places and far away from everyone.

What’s the most picturesque race track you’ve driven?

Great question and one I’ve never been asked before. There’s a few but if I have to pick, I’d say Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia as it has the most dramatic backdrop perched on the edge of the Bass Strait. On a beautiful day, it’s just idyllic but when the rain and wind rolls in from the ocean, it’s dismal and bleak! Very different but another track that I should mention is the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit in Kent, England. The old GP loop takes you through some beautiful woodlands on a fast and sweeping track and then back into a natural amphitheatre to finish the lap.

What holiday destination sticks in your mind from your childhood?

Definitely heading to Ulladulla on the NSW south coast for our annual summer holidays.

Ulladulla in Australia.

When you travel, what grooming products do you take with you?

Zero! I travel light. A razor and shaving gel is as far as I go.

What essential pieces of clothing do you always pack for every trip?

Fitness gear is a must and usually my own brand Aussie Grit Apparel, and of course a smart Boss shirt and pair of jeans.

As a racing driver and now in your role with Porsche and Boss, you must have been to Germany many times. What places did you enjoy visiting there?

I must confess that apart from travelling to and from the tracks I’ve raced at in Germany, I haven’t really explored anywhere outside the major cities. But, I do enjoy visiting Munich and Cologne.

What do you like to do on long flights?

Sleep would be on pole position for me, followed by movies and books.

Which country do you think has the most scenic roads for a leisurely drive?

That’s a very tough question to answer. I’d say Norway and the Dolomites in Italy and Colorado in the US.

Where was your last holiday?

California. I stayed at Big Sur and then drove up to Napa and Sonoma.

What holiday destination did you find particularly romantic?

Oman – the warm evenings, the night sky, and the general atmosphere of the country is just incredible.

Do you like activity holidays?

Very much so. Not so much skiing but I certainly do a lot of hiking and cycling on my holidays. I’m not a gym guy.

The Dolomites in Italy.

Do you like cultural holidays filled with museums and art galleries?

They wouldn’t be my first choice but I’ve been on some nice city breaks where I’ve gone off the tourist trail to find some interesting places. I like to discover what it’s like to be a local.

What landmark wowed you when you saw it?

The Great Wall of China. It’s just incredible how it snakes its way across the country.

Lazy beach holidays - love them or hate them?

At the right time, yes, but generally speaking, not really. At the end of a busy F1 season, a beach holiday was sometimes needed. Back in Australia, the beach means plenty of water-based sports, which is my idea of a holiday.

Is there one holiday spot that you’ve revisited a few times?

Oman was a regular holiday destination when I was racing. But these days, my first choices for holidays are Aspen, Colorado and Noosa in Queensland, Australia.

Webber wears Porsche x Boss

What’s the one key piece from the Porsche x Boss capsule collection that you would happily wear all the time?

If I had to pick one, it would be the zip-through sweatshirt with wadded body panel. It’s ideal for the relaxed lifestyle I lead and it ticks a lot of boxes.
