Netflix acquires The Rock and Martin Scorsese movies

Words by Nathan Irvine

No Friends, No problem.

Netflix has been on the receiving end of some terrible news recently. Losing the licences for Friends and The Office US has been met with an axe being flung at the company’s share price. But all is not lost for the streaming platform as it has just signed The Rock and Martin Scorsese to exclusive deals.

Dwayne Johnson’s Red Notice (date TBA), a thriller about the world’s most wanted art thief, will launch exclusively on Netflix. The all-star cast includes Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and, of course, The Rock. Johnson’s movies are box-office gold, so this is a massive coup. A snip at just $200m for the rights.

Scorsese’s mobster flick, The Irishman, has also been picked up by Netflix for a cool $185m. It’s based on the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa - a real life labour union leader from the USA. The almost unbelievable line-up includes Hollywood heavyweights Al Pacino (The Godfather), Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), the return of Joe Pesci (Home Alone) and, erm, Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond). It should be released in 2019.

Netflix really is going all-out.

Bay area

And that’s not all. Netflix handed over $150m for Six Underground. It’s a vigilante movie from director Michael Bay (Transformers) that stars Ryan Reynolds again, and was shot, in part, across locations in the UAE.

See, it’s not all doom and gloom for the streaming site. Even if it is set to lose all of its Friends.
