Netflix’s The Witcher: first images

Words by Nathan Irvine

Henry Cavill fronted show is getting closer.

One of the biggest Netflix Originals of 2019, The Witcher, has finally broken cover and given us a glimpse of how it’s shaping up. A lot of anticipation has been drummed up recently, with fans of the original books and video game series desperate to see how their favourite characters look in the show.

The answer is: yeah, not bad.

Which witch?

The Witcher sees Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, Mission: Impossible – Fallout) cast as hero Geralt of Rivia. The white haired protagonist is a no-nonsense monsterslayer with special powers and strength to help him overcome anything in his way.

Expectations are high because the source material from both the books and video game is so rich. Expect epic battles in the manner of Game of Thrones and, if the game stuff gets a mention, some truly gut-wrenching storylines.

Although the initial images look good, we’re still a bit worried with how it will turn out. Video game to live action shows and movies tend to be awful, as productions try – and fail – to mimic the thrills of the game action.

But for the first episode at least we’ll try to maintain our optimism as a Witcher watcher.
