Nintendo announces a new console

Words by Nathan Irvine

Switch up.

Nintendo has just announced a new console to its line-up. Well, sort of. The legendary Japanese video game software and hardware giant has announced Switch Lite – a handheld version of its popular Switch.

The difference with the Lite version is that it’s for on-the-go gaming. You can’t link it up to a television like the full-fat Switch, and the controllers aren’t removable either. It’s essentially following in the footsteps of the company’s long line of handheld consoles, right back from the original Gameboy.

Here’s an in-depth look at what the Switch Lite is like.

Pro gaming?

The global release date that’s pencilled in right now is for September 20. It’s also going to be a full $100 (approx. AED 367) cheaper than the original Nintendo Switch.

Although rumours have been circulating about two new Switch models being launched in 2019, we’re yet to hear anything about the mooted Switch Pro. The heftier machine is said to be a vast improvement in terms graphics and processing speeds like the upgraded PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. It’s unlikely we’ll hear anything about this for a while.

Still, we’re pleased that Switch Lite looks set to reignite mobile gaming. We’ve had more than enough of the tired titles on smartphones.
