StylePaul Smith Kits out Men in Black Agents

Words by Rob Chilton

Paul Smith has made bespoke suits for Chris Hemsworth’s upcoming Men In Black movie

The razor sharp repartee between Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson in the new Men In Black movie will be outdone by their even sharper outfits, which have been designed by Paul Smith.

The British fashion icon has helped create beautiful suits – in black, obviously – for the lead duo of this summer’s blockbuster Men In Black: International. The lucky actors in bespoke Paul Smith are played by Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, who displayed their jackpot chemistry in 2017’s Marvel superhero movie Thor: Ragnarok.

Hemsworth’s Agent H wears a suit with a colourful lining and a pair of Smith’s trademark striped socks. His cohort, Agent M, played by Tessa Thompson wears a two-button double-breasted trouser suit that gets a loving close-up in the film’s trailer.

Leaping onto the back of rocket bikes, firing heavy artillery and kickboxing aliens requires a certain amount of flexibility in an outfit and so Smith used the crease resistant, all-wool cloth from his travel suit to kit out the movie agents.

Smith worked with the film’s costume designer Penny Rose to create custom pieces for five of the film’s major male and female characters, including Hemsworth and Thompson but also Agent O, played by British veteran Emma Thompson. The suits will be part of a larger range in stores to coincide with the film’s release.

Smith described his contribution to the movie as “simple suits, but it’s all about the cut”. Costume designer Penny Rose, added, “From the moment I met with Paul I knew it was going to be a very advantageous arrangement for us all. The suits look great – this will be the most sartorially elegant Men In Black ever.”

Set to hit cinemas in June, the film sees the Men In Black agents fighting aliens for a fourth time. Of course, the franchise’s original stars, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have now moved on and will no doubt be gutted they never got to wear a bespoke Paul Smith suit on screen.
