PDL Coffee Co. & Barbershop Dubai review

Words by Nathan Irvine

Netflix and chill... quite literally.

First off, it’s pronounced, “pedal” rather than “Pee Dee Ell”. The coffee shop and barbers just off Sheikh Zayed Road is a community hub for a selection of Dubai cyclists hence the name. The bike theme continues with the interior as industrial concrete walls and metals have flourishes such as handlebars used to open doors.

PDL is best described as a gentleman’s retreat. It’s a secret hideaway for men where they can enjoy excellent coffee whilst indulging in a wide array of grooming treatments. Or simply somewhere to meet before and after a big ride.

Fresh to death

I opted for a Super Fade and beard trim to help sharpen up my unkempt look. It was long overdue and had me looking increasingly like a man who lives in his car.

As the latest hip-hop rings out over the speakers, my barber went to work. There was a methodical approach to shaving in my new, sharper hairstyle. Often a hairdresser can run through a cut on autopilot to the next appointment and mess things up, but I felt in safe hands at PDL.

The same can be said about the beard trim too. A combination of clippers and laser-accurate razor work resulted in an overall look that EDGAR editor Rob Chilton said made me appear “much fresher than before”. Who knows what he thought of my appearance before the grooming session.

During I was able to enjoy a delicious Chemex coffee from the adjoined café. The beans are sourced from the always-excellent Seven Fortunes roastery. It certainly beats cup of instant that you get at most barbershops – if you’re offered anything at all.

Man cave

After the trim I was lead to PDL’s secret weapon. Behind a corrugated steel sliding door is a treatment room with a difference. Huge leather reclining chairs are placed in front of your very own HDTV and wireless headphones. It was quite literally “Netflix and chill” as I watched Rick & Morty during a relaxing manicure, pedicure and shoulder massage.

Having those excellent treatments in such a unique setting really helped me to fully wind down. It’s a genius move from PDL and one you really should try out to fully appreciate it.

It might be off the beaten track, but PDL is not to be missed. The services are top quality and the venue has a super-cool aesthetic that you’ll love. In terms of male grooming salons, PDL takes the yellow jersey.
