PS5 and Xbox Two “more of the same” says studio head

Words by Nathan Irvine

Played out?

Well, that didn’t last long. After the recent E3 show in LA, video game fans have been hot for the rumours surrounding the next generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft.

But one industry legend has poured cold water over the excitement.

Speaking exclusively to VGC, PlatinumGames (Bayonetta, Nier: Automata) studio head Atsushi Inaba dubbed the upcoming new Xbox and PlayStation “more of the same”.

Inaba says “It’s OK. And by that I mean, I’m sure that things will move faster, graphics will be better and maybe it will be easier with less wait times… that’s good for the consumer…”

He continues “… but it’s more of the same, quite frankly, compared to previous generations. It’s nothing that’s disruptive or super innovative, if you ask me.” Ouch.

Console wars

Inaba’s worries stem from the fact that both Microsoft and Sony will use tech that “already exists”. This means that they won’t be wildly different from each other, and still fall behind the latest gaming PCs.

Obviously, it’s early days yet, and things may switch up as more concrete details emerge. But as a developer who’s been making games for decades, his words do carry enough weight to be slightly concerned.

This next-gen of consoles was always going to be tricky to outdo the last. For our money, graphics already seem to have topped out. 4K resolution is outstanding – 8K will be better, but what about the actual games?

To add balance, Xbox Game Studios boss, Matt Booty, reckons the shift between the two generations of machines will be like going from “2D to 3D”, and usher in a “pivot point for game design”.

Faster load times and discless machines will also be great. Developers will no doubt add their own creative flair to each game they release, so we’re sure there will be some surprises along the way.
