Tech and Gaming

TechSony and Microsoft are teaming up

Words by Nathan Irvine

One cloud gaming system to rule them all.

Well, we didn’t see this coming. In a move that caught everyone off guard, Sony and Microsoft has announced a partnership to work on a cloud gaming service together.

That’s right, the civil war is over as Xbox and PlayStation will unite to fight off a greater threat to their existence: Google and Amazon. Yes, it’s very much like Captain America and Iron Man coming together to take on Thanos.

The announcement, made via Microsoft, cements a union that will help both companies in the arms race to create the fabled “Netflix of gaming”. Given the financial muscle of Amazon and Google, it was always going to take something like this to fend them off.

Silver lining

The statement reads: “The two companies will explore joint development of future cloud solutions in Microsoft Azure to support their respective game and content-streaming services”.

It continues “…these efforts will also include building better development platforms for the content creator community”.

Put simply, Sony and Microsoft will pool their know-how of video games and cloud technology to stay ahead of the Amazon, and specifically, Google’s Stadia. And with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Two set for a 2020 release, the timing is perfect.

If we’re honest, we’re still on the fence with cloud gaming. The infrastructures have been around for a while, but we’re yet to see a near-flawless version. To get on par with Netflix or Spotify, where a subscription service has cut into hard copy sales of films and music, the foundations need to run super slick.

But it seems increasingly likely that the future of video games lies with streaming technology. Let’s just hope this unlikely partnership can take it to the next level.
