Surf star Kelly Slater goes on plastic patrol

Words by Rob Chilton

The king of the waves cleans up a beach in Bali to raise awareness of ocean conservancy and launch a new watch for Breitling.

Surfing legend Kelly Slater took part in a beach clean-up in Bali recently and was dismayed by what he saw. “What we have seen here and on beaches and in oceans around the world is shocking,” he said.

Helping Slater in the beach clean-up were fellow surfers, Australians Sally Fitzgibbons and Stephanie Gilmore. Slater added, “I always say that beaches are, in effect, our offices. Everyone can contribute to a cleaner environment – for ourselves and for future generations.”

The beach task in Bali was the setting for the launch of Breitling’s new limited edition Superocean Heritage watch that marks the brand’s partnership with the Ocean Conservancy. The blue and silver timepiece has a luminescent central dot at 12 o’clock that is coated with Super-LumiNova – as are the minute and hour hands – to emit a blue light instead of the standard green.

The dial carries a blue ‘Superocean’ inscription while the NATO strap is made of Econyl, a yarn made from recycled nylon waste. Flip the watch over and the caseback is engraved with the Ocean Conservancy logo.

The 2019 chronometer continues the legacy of the Breitling SuperOcean, which was first launched in 1957 for both professional and amateur divers, as well as scuba fans.

Breitling CEO Georges Kern commented, “This clean-up initiative in Bali underscored the power of our partnership with Ocean Conservancy. With the launch of this watch, we want to add a meaningful and credible element to our partnership.”
