Surviving the Dubai rain in the 2020 Cadillac XT6

Words by Nathan Irvine

Rainmaker.

If there’s one thing you’re guaranteed of in Dubai, it’s the sunshine. Spotless blue skies were to provide the perfect backdrop for our recent drive in the new 2020 Cadillac XT6. Except on this particular day, an angry gang of grey clouds loomed with intent above. Not to worry, I was sure everything would be fine.

And for the first hour of driving the high-end SUV, it was OK. The second hour suddenly turned a number of Dubai’s highways and byways into river rapids. So how would 2020 XT6 handle these new adverse conditions?

The answer is: very well.

I never felt like the car was in danger of aquaplaning. Instead the new XT6 gripped the road just as well in wet as it did with the dry. In fact, the sportier version of this all-new Caddy belies its size with great acceleration and sharp handling, it feels more akin to a sedan than a people carrier.

The exterior appears deceptively compact but hop inside and you’re greeted to a TARDIS-esque space. Seven full-size seats, across three rows, are slotted in perfectly and coated in a soft leather that means my backside doesn’t go numb while sat in traffic on a flooded Al Khail Road.

Follow the leader

Cadillac has always been a market leader in the luxury stakes, and the 2020 XT6 is no different. But it’s the tech side of things where it really leaves the competition behind. There are USB chargers dotted throughout the cabin, an ICE system that’s intuitive and plenty of bells and whistles to make every drive a joy.

On top of this, every effort has been made to keep you, your passengers and even pedestrians and other vehicles, safe.

Front pedestrian braking and night vision akin to a stealthy secret agents goggle will make sure you’re always aware of hazards. In heavy traffic, I got to see the forward collision alerts first-hand as other drivers dramatically swerve to avoid puddles.

Although the elements threatened to ruin the day, I’m happy to have tested the car in extreme weather. It might have been clouded over, but the 2020 Cadillac XT6 is certainly a ray of sunshine.
