Weekend GuideThree Things To Do This Weekend in Dubai: Flick, Rugger and Crispy Pata

Words by Edgar Daily

Tired of the usual “10 things to do this weekend”? Yep, so are we. Instead of that nonsense, we’re going to share what Team Edgar is up to. Catch you there!

Rob’s off on holiday (lucky him), Tom is reliving the past glories of the Rocky films before hitting up the Dubai Rugby Sevens, while Gareth is planning his monthly pilgrimage to one of this favourite restaurants for live music.

Tom: Creed II

Watching the Rocky films growing up is something of a rite of passage: a ritual introduction to overcoming adversity and film-making so cheesy you’re your cholesterol levels rising as you come out the other end of the training montages. Be that as it may, the sun eventually and mercifully set on Stallone’s time pummelling animal carcasses and running up stairs. We needed another cinematic pugilist to get behind. Enter Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed — the human avenger for these superhero saturated times. This weekend, the stunningly good first performance of Johnson as Creed version 2.0 gets its sequel. And I’m hoping for big things as we head for a showdown with the shadow of an old Russian foe.

Get a seat at any good cinema, and some average ones too: Vox. Roxy. Reel.

Tom: Dubai Sevens

The annual here-comes-the-boom weekend is upon us once again. Your chance to see some of the best all-round athletes on the planet, smash into each other at ungodly velocities and put on a scintillating show of rugby at its fastest — the Dubai Rugby Sevens. If you’re not a rugby fan, the vibrant myriad-national, cross-cultural party atmosphere that has the Emirates stands rocking is worth tagging along for alone. Listen out for the Kenyans, “We want another one, just like the other one!” It’s a superb sporting spectacle not to be missed.

Gareth: Miss Wáng

This is one of my favourite venues for live music in Dubai. Located at Majestic Hotel in Mankhool, it’s quite a distance if you’re based anywhere in New Dubai – but the trip is worth it. The restaurant-bar is secluded and intimate. You enter via an almost-secret door in the corner of the lobby, and then climb a flight of stairs. We recommend the crispy pata and any ‘bombs’ on the beverage menu.
