This motor racing team just made UAE history

Words by Nathan Irvine

Going the distance.

Dubai-based team, GPX Racing just made history for the United Arab Emirates. The motor racers managed to stay ahead of the pack at the 24-hours of Spa to claim the first ever endurance race win for the UAE.

The unfancied Porsche team of Michael Christensen, Kévin Estre and Richard Lietz upset the odds on the way to their maiden win. It was also the first time the UAE national anthem rang out at such a race.

The victory was even more impressive as it came under gruelling circumstances. At one point the race was halted due to torrential rain, but from the restart GPX raced to the line superbly.

Pierre-Brice Mena, Team Principal for GPX Racing said: “It hasn’t quite sunk in yet. A month ago we didn’t even know if we would be competing in this race.”

Mena continued “We were never able to relax with the traffic and had to battle right to the end with the other contenders. But we finished with not one technical issue.”

Well done, gents.
