Top 5 sports documentaries on Netflix right now

Words by Nathan Irvine

The warts and all of the sporting world.

The most fascinating side of any industry is the stuff that goes on behind the scenes. It’s these grubby, unpolished bits that happen to be the most revealing and often shines a light on the good, the bad and the ugly parts that people would rather you never saw.

Thankfully, Netflix is stacked with such documentaries. From beloved football managers and rock climbing to a show that rocked the world of sport forever – it’s all here.

So in no particular order, here’s a look at the top 5 sports documentaries on Netflix right now.

Where there’s a winner there has to be a loser, too. This documentary focuses on eight short stories about people that fluffed their lines, so to speak, in front of watching millions. LosersĀ interviews the unlucky sports stars and how these gut-wrenching moments shaped their lives.

Formula 1: Drive to Survive

The notoriously secretive world of Formula 1 is brought to life by Amy and Senna documentary maker, Asif Kapadia. With unprecedented access to the teams and drivers of the 2017/18 season, Formula 1: Drive to Survive shows the rivalries, in-fighting and determination it takes to succeed. A gripping watch.

The Dawn Wall

An absolutely riveting watch about rock climber Tommy Caldwell’s attempt to climb the El Capitan’s infamous Dawn Wall – a sheer face ascent that was deemed impossible. But much more of the intrigue comes from Caldwell’s life before the attempt. Like free-climbing when he was six years old to being held hostage in Kyrgyzstan.

Bobby Robson: More than a Manager

Get the tissues ready for this tearjerker. The late, great Bobby Robson was, as the title suggests, more than just a manager, and this documentary illustrates the point fantastically. Tales of Robson’s legendary impact on the game are regaled emphatically throughout by the likes of Pep Guardiola, Ronaldo, Gary Lineker and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Winner of Best Documentary Feature at the 90th Academy Awards, Icarus is an explosive film that exposes the inherent doping in the world of sport. It centres around Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov – the former head of Russia’s anti-doping agency and his admission that he was part of a doping program that shocked the world.
