Umbro unveils new range of football-inspired streetwear

British brand revamps its image

For people who grew up in the 1990s, Umbro was everywhere. The British brand’s famous double diamond logo was spotted on their own school sports kits, but also on strips worn by their sporting heroes, especially footballers.

For some England fans, it’s impossible to think of the heartbreaking defeat to Argentina at the 1998 World Cup or the team’s landmark 5-1 win over Germany in 2001 without picturing the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Michael Owen in a white – and baggy – Umbro kit.

But now, Umbro has boldly relaunched its portfolio with a range of sporty streetwear and chunky sneakers that hark back to those heady days in the 1990s.

Tie-dye styles and pastel colours can be found on oversized (fashion’s word for ‘baggy’) sweatshirts, football shirts, t-shirts and tracksuit tops, some of which are made from performance fabrics.

It’s almost 100 years since Umbro was born in 1924 but, with this new direction, the British sportswear company is hoping to secure another generation of fans for the future.
