When Coach met Keith

Words by Edgar Daily

The graffiti designs of street artist Keith Haring are splashed across menswear from Coach. A special-edition collection combining artist Haring’s iconic illustrations with Coach’s signature craft and all-American attitude. It’s a celebration of two legacies, both inspired by the spirit and optimism of New York City.

Coach stayed close to its New York City home for an idea to inspire its spring/summer menswear collection. Sweatshirts, polo shirts, t-shirts, accessories and footwear have been lovingly covered with the distinctive designs of Keith Haring, the iconic artist synonymous with New York.

Haring’s trademarks such as UFOs, dogs, dancing men, boomboxes and graphics made him part of the city’s furniture in the early 1980s after first ‘displaying’ his work as graffiti on New York subways. A friend of Andy Warhol (who himself features in Calvin Klein’s menswear collection this season), Haring’s energetic art quickly defined a period when NYC was booming with celebrities, models, art, music and fashion.

Haring died in 1990 aged just 31 but – just like New York City – his work never sleeps.
