Here at EDGAR, we think the world could always do with a little more happiness, which is exactly the reason why we’re such big fans of the work of British street art collective, The London Police (TLP).
Originally formed in 1998, the group started when founding members Chaz Barrissonn and Bob Gibson travelled from London to Amsterdam on a mission to brighten up the streets of the Dutch capital. They left a trail of their distinctive street art in their wake, with Barrissonn’s trademark circular smiling ‘LAD’ characters becoming ubiquitous in the city.

Since then many members have come and gone, and the group’s work can be seen in streets and galleries in some 35 countries around the world. While they’ve had many contributors over the years, Gibson’s architectural illustrative style of line drawing, and Barrissonn’s bold circle-based characters are the hallmarks of any TLP work.
The really incredible thing about these artworks is that they’re done completely freehand, without any compasses, guides or masks. The results are quite frankly astonishingly accurate, with an almost computer-like precision in the confident drawings, in which the ‘LAD’ characters add a playful element that brings more than a hint of fun.
Here are a few our our favourite artworks from the cheeky chaps of The London Police, and at the bottom of the page is a video featuring Chaz Barrissonn, giving an insight into what makes the eccentric artist tick. Enjoy:
