Here at EDGAR, we’ve written about some pretty incredible hotels, from a Moet & Chandon suite, to London’s famous Savoy Hotel, to an Australian paradise island.
But ever since Airbnb launched in 2008 - an innovative accommodation booking website, for those who don’t know - our passion for finding the very best hotels has been sidetracked somewhat.
Airbnb lists thousands of standard rooms, apartments and houses across 35,000 cities in almost 200 countries. But if you search a little deeper, you can find some incredible places that would rival any of the world’s best five-star properties.
From a ranch in California to a 16th Century castle in France, you need to check out these incredible, unique places to stay that will make you think twice about booking your normal hotel room:
Bamboo house, Bali

If you’ve ever wanted to live like Tarzan, this is your chance. Set within the Ayung River valley near Ubud, this awesome all-bamboo house sleeps nine and even comes with wi-fi and air conditioning.
Located in the Green Village, the property - actually named Sunrise House - is set over four floors with three en-suite double bedrooms, as well as a kitchen, lounge and dining area. The bamboo palace even has its own plunge pool and private garden, although it is the stunning views that will really take your breath away. AED 1,200 per night.
Ocean villa, Thailand

Located on the north coast of Koh Samui, this stunning property has the location and views to rival any top-rated hotel. Situated on the Bophut hillside, the panoramic views from the infinity pool will be your reason for staying here above all else.
The villa sleeps six, comes with staff and is five-minutes from the nearest beach. Despite its classy modern Asian contemporary design inside, this is somewhere you’ll spend most of the time outdoors and barefoot, with a small private garden and outside shower to boot. AED 1,290 per night.
Zen finca, Mallorca

If a private house set in secluded grounds is what you’re after, this property on the Spanish Balearic Island of Mallorca will be hard to beat. Situated in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, on the east of the island, ‘Alchemy’ has been described as one of the most stylish homes to have been built on Mallorca in the last 20 years.
A contemporary take on the traditional Finca, the house embodies a chic design with influences from both the Moors and far Eastern philosophies. Previously used as a location for filming, its zen like feel with the surrounding landscape and not a sound to be heard transports you away from whichever bustling metropolis you were hoping to escape from. AED 3,850 per night.
Love nest, California

For those looking to escape the madness of Los Angeles, or just wanting to experience the cowboy life for a few days, living on this ranch is pretty unique. Literally called ‘The Love Nest’, this one-bed room is nestled above a barn in Morongo Valley, California.
Living ranch-esque is about more than just the sleeping quarters though. Activities include playing pool or horse shoes, an adult swing, and jeep rides around the property with panoramic views of the valley. It’s not without its luxury though, as a limo service is available as are massage and facial treatments. AED 500 per night.
Classic château, France

What we really love about Airbnb is that it opens up a segment of accommodation previously very hard to gain access to: castles, or as the French say, Châteaux. This one, Château La Commanderie de Plaigne situated in the southern Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, could have sprung straight out of a Jane Austin novel.
The castle sleeps 22 people, although you might be tempted to rent it out all to yourself. Set in 18 hectares of private grounds including a swimming pool, La Commanderie de Plaigne was once a commandery of the knights of Malta. It can hold a function for 140 people - should you be in the mood to host - and is one hour from the coast. A perfect place to write that novel you’ve always talked about. AED 4,066 per night.
