Baume & Mercier enters the bronze age

interviewBaume & Mercier brand director Edouard Achkan introduces the new bronze watches in the company’s range and explains why he feels the metal is so special.

Baume & Mercier adds new automatic models to its Clifton Club collection this year with this bronze-cased piece the highlight. Brand director for the Middle East, Africa and the Indian Sub-Continent, Edouard Achkan describes the appeal of this warm and welcoming metal

Q.

What do you think is the main draw of bronze when used in watch cases?

A.

It’s a living, changing material that, as it oxidises, becomes a deeper, darker brown in colour and may in time develop a greenish sheen. All these nuances are due to exposure to air, water or sunlight. Remember, a watch is a very personal object that we keep throughout the years and eventually gift to our children, so what is better than having and wearing a watch that will be a unique one?

Q.

The bronze case of the Clifton Club Automatic gives it a slightly retro feel, don’t you think?

A.

Yes, I think bronze adds some old-world charm, whether that’s in interior design for the home or in watchmaking. Fashions and trends never really go away, they just come around again and old trends become the new trends.

Q.

The bronze watch comes with dials in four colours. What sparked that design decision?

A.

Nowadays, people play with colours to match their accessories with their clothes. So to stay in tune with the times, the Clifton Club Bronze is available in four versions. Black dial with a black calfskin strap featuring sailcloth-like patterns; a brown dial with a brown nubuck calfskin strap with off-white topstitching; a blue dial that comes with a blue rubber strap; and finally a green dial that’s very appealing to our Middle East clientele that comes with a brown nubuck calfskin strap with off-white topstitching.

Q.

Which one is your favourite?

A.

I personally like the blue dial because I think it’s very elegant and sporty at the same time. The blue matches my shirts and suits of my formal office look but also my streetwear style at the weekend.

Q.

Are you noticing that customers are looking for colour in their watches these days?

A.

Our Middle East clientele is very specific about their needs and like blue dials and especially green ones. The green dial in the bronze collection, we believe, will be a hit here. Our clients’ needs are constantly evolving in the different moments and occasions of their life, whether professional or personal. We try to make watches that are loyal to the Baume & Mercier spirit; that means high-performance, natural elegance, and easy everyday wear.
