It’s probably the most predictable supercar announcement of 2014, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting.

A few months after announcing its new model the 650S - to slot in between its 12C and P1 cars - McLaren has confirmed it will make a limited-run edition in collaboration with its McLaren Special Operations (MSO) division.

The bespoke car comes after a strong reaction to the MSO 650S concept following its unveiling at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year, according to McLaren. In reality, it was always likely that the British manufacturer would make a faster and rarer version of the 650S.

Only 50 examples of the MSO model will be made - available in either coupé of spider body styles - with 10 per cent of them heading to our Middle Eastern shores, so keep your eye out for one.

The bespoke version retains the 641-horsepower, 3.8-litre, twin-turbo V8 and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as featured in the original 650S, which means it’s mainly a cosmetics upgrade.

So what does the MSO 650S offer that the standard 650S doesn’t? A number of carbon fibre style upgrades to start, including extended side blades and a three-piece rear bumper.

There’s also a more aggressive rear diffuser and new palladium coloured 10-spoke super lightweight allow wheels, with a diamond cut effect on the inside of each spoke. So for goodness’ sake, don’t scratch them.

Inside, the cabin is upholstered with carbon black leather and carbon fibre detailing throughout. A gloss finish has been applied to the air vents and handling and powertrain switchgear - AKA engine drive options. But just to make sure your passenger knows this is a limited edition car, a signature plaque is mounted to the MSO-branded sill panel.

Coming in only three colours - orange, black and silver - prices start at $355,185 - AED 1.3 million - for the MSO 650S Coupé and $402,531 - AED 1.5 million - for the Spider, with first deliveries due before the end of the year.

But to be honest, if this is the first time you’re hearing about the new car then chances are you’re not going to own one. With only five coming to the region, we fancy they’ve all already been snapped up.
