Formula One legend Michael Schumacher has awoken from his coma and been discharged from a hospital in Grenoble, where he had been receiving treatment since December following a serious accident while skiing.
The ex-F1 driver had been in an induced coma since he sustained a serious head injury in the French Alps resort of Meribel, but will now continue his rehabilitation at an undisclosed location, his family announced in a statement.
“Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore,” the statement said.
“His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months.
“The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes to Michael. We are sure it helped him.”
The German star’s bodyweight is said to have halved since his accident, as he has had to undergo two operations and battle pneumonia.
At EDGAR we hope this is the start of the ex-Ferrari and Mercedes driver’s recovery. In the meantime enjoy this video of him becoming the most decorated F1 driver in history.
