If you’re the owner of a bicycle, or you can look back far enough into your childhood to remember riding one, you’ll know that repositioning the chain into its correct position should it come loose is not easy, nor enjoyable.

But for one Korean artist, the bike chain is his paintbrush; his tool to create incredible sculptures of the human form.

Young-Deok Seo takes both bicycle and industrial steel chains, knits them tightly into configurations and produces human figures that are equally impressive for their intricacy, as they are for the obvious talent required to make them.

However, look closely and you see the figures often look in despair, bent over in pain and riddled with disease. The rippled surface of the chains is not a byproduct of Seo’s decision to use the material, it is in fact a metaphor for what the artist sees as the human condition. As if to reaffirm, Seo gave some of his artworks titles such as Infection – Anguish, Infection – Ego, and Addict.

Truly stunning works of art, Seo has exhibited in Seoul, Istanbul and Hong Kong. We hope he comes to the UAE soon, because this artwork is incredible…
