Guess what? The Burj Khalifa has garnered yet another world record - this time for the highest viewing deck in the world, at an eye-popping 555.7 metres. Now this should come as no surprise, because if we’ve learnt one thing about the UAE in recent years, it’s that it does not like to come second in anything.

Of course, we have the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, as well as the tallest hotel, the JW Marriott Marquis, and the fastest roller coaster: Formula Rossa, in Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi. But as well as the high-profile records such as the above, the UAE also prides itself in excelling at some of the lesser well known things. Here are 10 of some of the most obscure records currently held by the UAE…

1. Most participants in an underwater clean up

In April 2014, a record 300 divers plunged into Abu Dhabi’s Free Port, collecting around nine tonnes of waste.

2. Largest sticky note mosaic

Dubai Land Department currently hold the record for the largest mosaic made out of sticky notes, beating the previous record set in Belgium in 2012. Made out of 300,000 notes, the mosaic aimed to raise awareness about autism in the UAE.

3. Largest tennis ball mosaic

Perhaps inspired by the sticky note success, Dubai earned the record for the largest tennis ball mosaic in September. The previous record of 500 tennis balls was smashed when a giant mosaic made of up 2,327 balls was created and installed on the events area of Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Dubai, as a celebration of Dubai’s Expo 2020 victory.

4. Longest bridal veil

The Perfect Wedding Show at the Expo Centre in Sharjah played host to this rather obscure record, as a 5km-long, 7kg bridal veil was made, smashing the previous record of just 3.358km-long.

5. Highest base jump

In April 2014, French duo Vince Reffet and Fred Fugen set the new world record for the highest base jump, leaping from the top of the 828-metre Burj Khalifa.

6. Largest display of handmade paper dolls at a single venue

Where do they dream up these records from? We’re not quite sure, all we know is that Emirati artist Amnah Al Fard from Umm Al Quwain holds the title, for her impressive 1,145-doll collection.

7. Most shots fired in a sustained firework display

Despite the wordy title of this record, it’s pretty simple really: On the stroke of midnight on New Years Eve 2013-2014, around 400,000 fireworks exploded in quick succession above the Palm Jumeirah, blasting the previous record of 77,282 shots out of the water.

8. Largest photo album

Containing rare and historic images of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the mammoth book is 5.5 metres wide by 4.5 metres high and contains around 210 pictures in both colour and black and white.

9. Largest swimming lesson

Abu Dhabi’s Yas Waterworld made a splash into the record books with a record 777 people learning to swim at the same time.

10. Most patients screened for diabetes in eight hours

Just when you thought they couldn’t get much more obscure, Dubai also lays claim to the world record for diabetes screenings, testing 8,675 shoppers in the Dubai Mall within the given time limit. At least this one has a beneficial health factor.
